Hey alll - has anyone had any experience silk screening on soy? My company has a line of sustainable fabrics and we're wondering how that would work out logistically... Anyone?
Thanks!

Re: Silk Screening on Soy?
Thu, June 7, 2007 - 5:18 AMI have never done it meeself, but as it is a natural fiber, I don't see it as being a problem...the indications for acrylic fabric ink is that they are suitable for natural fibers....but if any certain fabric is too thin or pourous, there will be bleed-through.....

I would encourage you to investigate the use of natural or remanufatured dyes, especially those made from locally available natural materials. Once you have identified your preferred ink and design requirements, you can decide on the application method.
The processing of your fabric will have some bearing on it's ability to absorb ink, but unless you're already habituated to working with cotton, I think your learning curve will be about the same, whatever the fabric you start out with.

Re: Silk Screening on Soy?
Mon, June 25, 2007 - 8:14 AMI would like to add, that you could forgo the whole chemical emulsion process by making your images using stencils on a blank screen (it is my current obsession)..so once you DO find a good, earth-friendly ink that works well on your fabric...you can be even more earth-friendly by using recycled materials to create your designs. Just a thought...there are some drawbacks to this method...like the permenace of the original design, but I am only just working on my methods now.
